New EPA Study Released on Safety of Rubber Mulch on Playgrounds and Artificial Turf:  Over the past several years, a number of public concerns have been raised over the use of tire crumb materials in turf fields and playgrounds. Download the EPA Study, A Scoping-Level Field Monitoring Study of Synthetic Turf Fields and Playgrounds.  Key findings:  the concentrations of components monitored in this study were below levels of concern. Likewise the average extractable lead concentrations for turf field wipe samples were low. Although there are no directly comparable standards, average concentrations were well below the EPA standard for lead in residential floor dust (40 micrograms per square foot).  Read more.

Glass, a very eco-friendly material ~

There is NO PETROLEUM in glass.  Glass is made from sand, an abundant resource.  It is melted down and formed into bottles. It is safe to drink from. The drawbacks are it is heavier to ship, and breaks. At the end of it's useful life, it can be recycled, melted down, and reformed into a new product. There is an abundant supply [of waste glass] because the bottling plants in the US are not buying it. They either want a cleaner source or are going to plastic. So, most of the recycled glass is ground up and used as landfill [or going into new markets such as clean & tumbled glass mulch].

Plastic is made from nonrenewable crude oil, which produces toxic waste in its mining and manufacture. It leaches into foods and beverages. Some plastics are recycled, but plastics that end up in landfills or ecosystems don't biodegrade for hundreds of years.  Contributed by Debra Lynn Dadd

Our success depends on you ~ supporting innovation and creativity in using recycled products, and I encourage everyone to be part of the solution and find something on our gardening to-do list for 2010 projects around your home, business or community:

l Plant a raised garden from plastic wood logs.

l Create a path using glass mulch, clean, safe to walk on, natural deterrent to slugs.

l Border your property or edging with plastic post and rail fencing ~ looks like real wood.

l Create a compost pile using plastic wood compost bins.

l Build a treehouse from plastic logs.

l Hang a tire swing, put rubber mulch under any fall zones / playground equipment.

l Build a rock climbing wall with rubber mulch underneath the fall zone, border it with rubber timbers.

l Cover that old deck with new rubber tiles to add comfort, beauty and slip-resistance from falls, also reduces yearly maintenance.

l Use glass mulch in an old leaky bird bath, or create a simulated waterfall in your yard with glass, never fades!

l Create a firepit and add glass mulch for a stunning new look.

l For a sidewalk, instead of using concrete, use rubber walkways and rubber timbers.

l For events/fundraisers, hand out our imprinted newspaper pencils, made from rolled-up newspapers.  5% OFF newspaper pencils NOW THROUGH MARCH 31ST!

l Incorporate garden art with recycled materials:  tea lights from bicycle parts, rubber floor mat, an old boot or chair as a planter, or tire planter shaped into a bird.

l Create a peaceful zen garden with glass sand or glass mulch (size #1 rakes nice).

l Create a sand-box using post-consumer glass play sand ~ safe, crystalline silica-free sand, safer than regular sand!  (Crystalline silica is found in 90-100% of regular sand and is considered a carcinogen).

I think you will discover our products are so unique that you will be the 1st on your block (probably in your whole town) with the latest green products which will reduce your maintenance and are truly a beautiful transformation of waste materials into useful, durable products.  Be a pioneer, an innovator, a visionary, a leader, a trendsetter ~ be the change!

Website Building Workshops ~ offered free from Close the Loop:

After spending 15 years in corporate America, leaving that world and starting my own business, Close the Loop, in the era of the DOT COM’s, being successful at it, then seeing the market collapse in 2008 and long unemployment lines in our area, I decided I wanted to do something about it.  If only these people could see how easy it is to start and run their own internet business on a very limited budget ($5-$10 per month) with a minimum amount of computer experience.

Some Background Info:
Close the Loop, LLC, a small business founded 10 years ago to help US manufacturers build the market for high quality recycled products from our waste materials (tires, plastics & glass, etc) at no cost to the manufacturer.  This business model works ~ performance-based income.  If we can build the demand for US made goods, we will create more jobs as the demand increases.  We believe we need to get back to manufacturing in the USA, and support these manufacturers by purchasing and using their products. Our focus in writing this book is to have entrepreneurs help the manufacturers in the US to sell their products in all corners of the world ~ Manufacturing jobs have dropped to their lowest level since 1941, below 9% of workforce for the first time

Inspirational Quotes

“We, who have so much, must do more to help those in need. And most of all, we must live simply, so that others may simply live.” ~ Ed Begley, Jr.

“The activist is not the man who says the river is dirty.  The activist is the man who cleans up the river.” ~ Ross Perot

“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” ~ Chief Seattle, 1855
