Recycling Mystery: What Can I Do With My Leftover Medications?

Donating your excess medication is a great way to avoid flushing medication while scoring some philanthropic points. UNICEF estimates that around 9.7 million children under the age of five die due to preventable causes and lack of basic services to treat illnesses such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and HIV/AIDS. These deaths could be preventable with some medications that could be hanging around in your bathroom.  Read more.  

Burning Trash Won’t Make it Disappear  Trash containing plastics, polystyrene (such as foam cups), CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) pressure-treated wood, and bleached or colored papers are the worst kind because these materials can produce harmful chemicals when burned.  The smoke from the fire can deposit dangerous chemicals on garden vegetables and garden soil. People can be exposed to those chemicals by eating fruits and vegetables grown near the trash-fire or in garden soil tilled with the ashes. Chemicals can enter milk, eggs or meat if farm animals eat contaminated feed or soil.  Read more.

New NC Law ~ It is illegal not to recycle plastic bottles

A new state law is taking effect that prohibits all plastic bottles from being disposed of in landfills. Supporters of the law say it will boost North Carolina's burgeoning recycling industry, which has an unmet demand for old bottles that can be converted into new goods.

It would save space in landfills and, because plastic is derived from petroleum, it would decrease dependence on foreign oil.

New Northumberland tire program gives life to old wheels
It works for residents because they no longer have to pay to dispose of their tires. Now that the county has registered as a ‘collector’ in the Used Tires Program, all that money will be saved, which will have benefits beyond the obvious cash savings.
